On September
8, 2009 the Membership was invited to come in and try out the new all-steel backstop.
O
The project to re-model the old
backstop started in May 09 and took
all summer to complete. After the removal of the old sand trap style
bullet backstop the fabrication of the 3" & 5" steel channel
sub-
structure for the new back-stop began. The substructure supports
eight 4'x10'
sheets of 3/8" AR-400 across the 32' width of the range
The structure also supports
a 10" pipe and upper deflector plate
across the entire top. Bullets striking the AR-400 plates slide up and
into a 4.5" opening in the side of the 10" pipe causing them to circle
inside the pipe where the bullet's energy and speed are diminished
to the point where
gravity takes over and the bullets and bullet frag-
ments harmlessly slide back down the front of the AR-400 plate. The
lead and copper jackets that accumulate at the bottom of the front
plate are picked up and recycled. 1/2" plate is used to cap off the
ends of the backstop and for added safety
1/2" conveyor belting
was hung between
the target carriers to help contain any bullet frag-
ments that might bounce
back off the backstop toward the shooters.
